Announcing a New Season

The KU Rock Chalk Singers

An Intergenerational Choir for Secondary School Students, Grades 8-12, & Senior KU Music Education Majors

Purpose and Introduction

The KU Rock Chalk Singers is a unique, intergenerational ensemble comprised of secondary school students, grades 8-12, and KU senior music majors preparing for careers in music education. The purpose of the ensemble is for secondary school students and future music teachers to learn from one another, as together they study and rehearse a varied repertoire of choral music.

Secondary school members can expect to develop and hone sight-singing skills, build healthy vocal technique, explore the physiology and acoustics of how the voice works, and learn about the history, culture, and languages of the compositions studied. KU student members will have opportunity to lead various portions of rehearsals, tutor individual students, and practice music teaching skills.

In addition, if they elect to do so, secondary school members can receive, without cost, one individual coaching session with a KU voice teacher, either a faculty member or graduate student, and a series of three individual sight-singing improvement sessions with a KU music major. If desired, individual sessions will be offered at mutually convenient times apart from the weekly ensemble rehearsals. These sessions are offered as a service to participating secondary school singers who may desire them; they are not required for membership in the choir. If you desire to participate in either of these extra sessions, please let us know by email or during one of the rehearsal times prior to September 28.

Rehearsals will be held each Tuesday evening, 6:00 - 7:15 p.m.,Room 575 Murphy Hall, on the KU campus. There is no fee for participation. However, an application is required.
